PR is so easy to get to, has a super sailing scene and a great nightlife. It’s a huge surprise that it doesn’t get more crowded in the water, and that’s a good thing. Everybody knows everybody else, the conditions are great, the locals are excellent sailors, and there are no crowds. No doubt, the island offers variety you won’t find in any other Caribbean destination: First class kiteboarding conditions, killer wave sailing, excellent free-riding spots and tons of racing action. Take a flight to San Juan (SJU) from Dallas, the Northeast or Florida. If you don’t want to rent gear, they’ll take your equipment without a big fuss with reasonable excess baggage charges. There are no customs hassles, no funky currency exchanges and a language barrier that can be easily overcome with a little ingenuity. No excuses, really.

A great sailing venue is best appreciated if you have great gear to boot. If you want to travel light, Velauno offers rentals for windsurf gear as well as surfboards and kiteboards. To view out rental rates, click here.
People in Puerto Rico love to party, and any reason is good enough to get out and do it. The partying in San Juan is pretty intense from Thursday through Saturday nights. It goes off around 11 p.m. and cools down just before sunrise. At Puntas las Marías, Taigüey Beach Bar and Mango’s Café are an excellent choice to party. You can also visit Old San Juan were there are many bars, restaurants and clubs to choose from. Our advice is to take a cab and explore on foot once you get there. Soleil, in Piñones, is an awesome beach bar in its own right. Friday nights are an intense scene of people and music. It’s very windsurfer-friendly and often has windsurfing videos playing.
Car rentals are easy but should be booked in advance for the best deals. All the national brands are well represented, but try
- Charlie’s Car Rental (787-728-2418) or
- LM Car Rental (787-791-1160)
for a better deal.
